Article Abstract:

Non-HIV viral infections, including herpes simplex, influenza A and cytomegalovirus, can be treated with specific drugs that are the most effective with the fewest side effects. The most effective drugs for six viral infections are presented, including acyclovir, ribavirin and valacyclovir. A description of the drugs, adverse and side effects, what viral infection is treated and the potential for resistance are provided. A table with the drugs organized by viral infection that includes cost and dosage information is also presented.

Article Abstract:

The drugs of choice for all viral infections excluding HIV infection is discussed. The drugs include acyclovir, amantadine, cidofovir, famciclovir, fomivirsen, foscarnet, ganciclovir, interferon alfa, lamivudine, oseltamivir, penciclovir, ribavirin, trifluridine, valacyclovir, and zanamivir. A table lists the drugs of choice for treating cytomegalovirus infections, hepatitis b, hepatitis C, herpes simplex, influenza A and B, respiratory syncytial virus infections, chickenpox, and herpes zoster.
