Article Abstract:

Studies have shown that the ABCD checklist is fairly accurate for diagnosing melanoma. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that arises from moles, which are small areas of pigment. The ABCD checklist stands for asymmetry, border irregularity, color irregularity and diameter greater than a pencil eraser. Normal moles are usually symmetrical, with a round border, uniform color and smaller diameter. It is important to diagnose melanoma early because the chances of a cure are much greater. Melanoma was rare in the early 20th century but the lifetime risk in 1996 is 1 in 87.

Is Routine Screening for Melanoma a Benign Practice?

Article Abstract:

There may be no justification for screening people for melanoma. It is difficult to differentiate a benign skin mole from a cancerous one, especially in the early stages. A substantial increase in the number of people with melanoma with no increase in the mortality rate means many people are being falsely diagnosed.

Early Detection of Melanoma

Article Abstract:

People should be encouraged to examine their skin and look for the warning signs of a skin cancer called melanoma. Many cancer associations specifically recommend monthly examinations, and primary care physicians can play a greater role in this effort.
