Article Abstract:

Leicestershire, England has developed an integrated hospital and community midwifery service dedicated to client needs. A multi-disciplinary team approach aims to provide greater choice and fulfillment for mothers and increased job satisfaction for midwives. Low risk women may receive midwife-led maternity care in the community. Leicestershire has been awarded midwifery/nursing development unit status.

Hungary for change

Article Abstract:

A midwife describes the maternity services in Hungary, including the inflexibility of obstetric practice and high staffing levels compared to UK standards. Both doctors and health visitors have a much higher status than midwives in Hungary, and midwives work wholly in hospitals. Proposed changes in medical care such as a new insurance system, are discussed.
