Delayed delivery of multiple gestations: maternal and neonatal outcomes

Article Abstract:

Delayed delivery of preterm fetuses in twin and triplet pregnancies may improve neonatal outcomes. Researchers evaluated a protocol to delay delivery of subsequent fetuses after a first was born prematurely. In seven multifetal pregnancies, 78% of delayed newborns survived, compared to 57% of preterm firstborns. Delaying delivery of subsequent fetuses increased the average gestational age of the remaining fetuses at delivery by 33 days. Delayed delivery improved the health of these newborns and reduced their average stays in the hospital.

Is placenta previa more common in multiple gestations?

Article Abstract:

Placenta previa does not occur more frequently in multiple pregnancies, according to a study of 29,268 deliveries. Less than half of one percent of the pregnancies were complicated by placenta previa, and the outcomes were similar in single and multiple pregnancies. Placenta previa occurs when the placenta covers the opening in the uterus that leads to the vagina.

Article Abstract:

Women who receive infertility treatment are not always aware of the complications that can arise form a multiple pregnancy. However, they may change their minds about having twins or triplets once they are advised of the risks.
