Dead men walking

Article Abstract:

Men's health needs still tend to be given a lower priority than those of women in the UK, both by the government and by men themselves. Men remain unwilling to seek medical advice, as they do not wish to be seen as vulnerable. This means that treatable conditions such as testicular cancer are not being detected sufficiently early. There is a shortage of health promotion material on men's health, and well-man clinics have not proved popular. The Men's Health Forum has made a number of significant recommendations, including creating a more flexible service because clinical environments do not produce good results for men.

Man to man

Article Abstract:

Health services specifically for men are needed because they get diseases such as prostate and testicular cancer. They are also more likely to die than women. Male health professionals in Bradford, United Kingdom, have set up a group called Health of Men (HOM) which aims to ensure that medical services meet the needs of men and make them aware of health risks. HOM visits schools to talk to boys about puberty, sex education, values and relationships. HOM has also set up a mobile health clinic which will give put contraception, offer basic health screening to men and can refer them to other agencies.
