The future for mental health nursing

Article Abstract:

A lack of resources and poor public image are cited as two of the main problems facing UK nurses in the field of mental health. Researchers questioned 114 mental health nurses who were attending a conference on mental health provision. Delegates answered 20 questions which focused on the resourcing, skill requirement and incidence of physical violence encountered during their work. Inner city nurses reported the highest incidence of assault. The research also highlighted the need for more awareness of the needs of mentally ill patients when services are purchased.

Objections against the practice of female circumcision could be interpreted as racialist attack by the West on other cultures. The provision of better medical care and facilities for females who have undergone circumcision would be more useful. Uncircumcised women cannot marry in some countries and the practice is seen as a traditional rite into womanhood. Female circumcision can cause haemorrhage, pain and long term complications. Women will not be able to obtain the appropriate medical care if the practice is made into a criminal activity by the authorities.

Article Abstract:

Development towards a general model of nursing along European lines similar to US practice threatens the future of UK psychiatric nursing. US nurses have compensated for lack of clinical expertise by upgrading academic qualifications. UK psychiatric nurses have established a strong therapeutic base but neglected academic qualifications. However, UK nursing is becoming increasingly academically-orientated. Psychiatric nurses must reemphasise their professional role to maintain status.
