The UK government has announced a 10-year plan to tackle use of illegal drugs. The government's white paper is based on an investigation headed by former Police Chief Constable Keith Hellawell. Hellawell concluded that there are up to 200,000 people addicted to drugs in the UK and that nearly half of young people under the age of 25 have used drugs. The government's four major strategies to tackle drug abuse are to be aid for addicts wishing to overcome their problems, helping young people resist drugs, addressing drug related crime, and suppression of drug availability.

Article Abstract:
The British government is to introduce legislation forcing child sex offenders to register where they live, and they must also keep in contact with the police. Paedophiles who do not comply may be fined 5,000 pounds sterling or sent to prison. Some health professionals are worried that the general public may respond aggressively towards the offenders if their names are made known. The police will need to liaise with care workers when dealing with these offenders and care must be taken to stop them going into hiding and becoming harder to trace.
