Case-control study of risk factors for partial molar pregnancy

Article Abstract:

Women with certain reproductive histories may be at greater risk of having a partial molar pregnancy. A partial molar pregnancy is an abnormal pregnancy where some fetal tissues exist but with abnormal chromosome patterns. Researchers analyzed the reproductive histories and diets of 65 women diagnosed as having partial molar pregnancies. A comparison of the 65 subjects to 130 women with normal reproductive histories revealed that women who had two or more miscarriages, irregular menstrual cycles, used oral contraceptives for more than four years, had experienced infertility, and had given birth to live male infants had a greater risk of conceiving a partial molar pregnancy. Diet, in particular lack of carotene, was not associated with partial molar pregnancy.

A brief synopsis of the role of human papillomaviruses in cervical carcinogenesis

Article Abstract:

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection plays an important role in the development of cervical cancer. HPV is a sexually transmitted virus that causes genital warts. Certain strains of HPV are strongly associated with cervical cancer while others are less so. The virus is believed to cause cancer by disrupting the genes responsible for regulating the host cell's growth, development, and division. Since few infections progress to cancer, other factors such as smoking, other viruses, and random mutation probably also promote the conversion to cancer. Nonetheless, women with HPV infections should receive long-term follow up.
