Article Abstract:

The UK government has launched a programme to promote healthy workplaces and reduce stress of the 1 million workers in the National Health Service. The recommendations have been put together by the Department of Health, nursing associations and the British Medical Association. A nursing survey discovered psychological problems were encountered by between 29 - 48% of nurses and between 21 - 50% of hospital doctors and general practitioners. Stress-related illness accounts for 40% of absenteeism.

Article Abstract:

Andrew Hollinghurst, registered nurse from Royal Bolton Hospital, Bolton, UK, and Cliff Richardson, research fellow at John Moores University, Liverpool, formerly an acute pain nurse, established a pain control procedure for patients undergoing argon laser therapy. The men won NT/3M National Nursing Awards for their work, which involved the use of Entonox, gas and air, which has enabled patients to take more laser therapy per session, and resulted in cost savings.

New air of confidence: teenagers with allergies can now enjoy activity holidays like any other children thanks to a project in the Lake District

Article Abstract:

A project in the Lake District, jointly operated by the National Asthma Campaign and the National Eczema Society, run holidays for children with asthma and eczema, with the aim of giving them confidence and helping them to be independent. The activity holidays include night hikes, canoeing and swimming, and provide education, advice and support and involve trained instructors and nurse volunteers.
