Last chance for midwives

Article Abstract:

An inquiry led by Nicholas Winterton and the all-party health committee has recommended a maternity service which advises midwifery-led maternity care and which gives women the right to make choices in childbirth. Midwives have had their autonomy eroded gradually since 1948, and in order to have the recommendations included in legislation, midwives will need to make a renewed stand to lend their support. Details of the role of midwives in maternity services since 1948 are included.

A cause for concern

Article Abstract:

Extracts from an antenatal care diary reveal poor quality care for a pregnant woman. Care was hospital rather than client orientated. It failed to take account of research into individualised care. The client received inaccurate information and no midwife support. She was unable to discuss worries or a birth plan. Professionals failed to take account of previous pregnancies. However, the pregnancy culminated in a successful and uneventful delivery.
