Behind the blockade

Article Abstract:

Cuban nurses and doctors have learnt to use the facilities and supplies available to them to offer the highest quality care to their patients, despite the country being subject to economic isolation by the US. Cuba's health care system has developed into one of the best in the world, mainly due to the government's continued committment. Infant mortality has fallen to 7.2 deaths per 1,000 births in 1997 from 60 deaths per 1,000 births in 1959. Pregnant women are often helped through childbirth with complimentary medicine because of the lack of analgesia.

Visions for the future

Article Abstract:

The U.K. health minister Stephen Dorrell's consultation document outlining the future of primary care seeks views from health professionals. However, the radical restructuring of the National Health Service, including the introduction of market forces, may mean that such views will be too late to be significant. Urgent issues that must be addressed include the reduction in community nurse training and the need for patients' wishes to be considered. It is essential that future primary care decisions are community-based.
