Behavioural misdiagnosis

Article Abstract:

Medical staff involved with people suffering from learning disabilities ought to be informed about neurological dysfunctions in order to help their patients. According to hearsay, it would appear that the conduct of a lot of the learning disabled can be connected to neurological dysfunctions which could be pinpointed. Such dysfunctions, which can be eased by behavioural intervention can include visual agnosia, which is believed to result from impairment to a particular area of the brain.

Seclusion: the use of a stress model to appraise the problem

Article Abstract:

Seclusion is disliked by many people as a means of controlling a psychiatric patient with difficult or violent behaviour. There are many theories being considered by a number of professional bodies, although not many acceptable alternatives can be arrived at. In practice, the psychiatric nurse has a very difficult job to do, and sometimes has no alternative. The practice is often justified as being beneficial for the patient, but is often more to do with relieving the nurse's stress.

Phasing out seclusion through staff training and support

Article Abstract:

There are very mixed views about the use of seclusion as part of the treatment of mental health patients, especially in the light of fatalities which have taken place while patients have been secluded. Recent research has indicated that seclusion can be avoided in many cases, but only if staff are offered the necessary support, training and resources to deal with challenging behaviour. Avoiding seclusion would be welcomed by observers who feel that this process is open to abuse.
