Association Between Myeloperoxidase Levels and Risk of Coronary Artery Disease
Article Abstract:
An enzyme in white blood cells called myeloperoxidase may cause atherosclerosis if present in increased quantities, according to a study of 158 patients with coronary artery disease and 175 healthy volunteers. The enzyme promotes the oxidation of fats, which is considered a risk factor for atherosclerosis.

Association of nitrotyrosine levels with cardiovascular disease and modulation by statin therapy
Article Abstract:
Nitric oxide can oxidize proteins, which may be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This was the conclusion of a study of 100 patients with cardiovascular disease and 108 healthy people. This study also showed that a group of drugs called statins can decrease the amount of these oxidized proteins, in addition to lowering blood cholesterol levels. Nitric oxide is a natural substance in the body that relaxes blood vessels.

Prognostic value of myeloperoxidase in patients with chest pain
Article Abstract:
The presence of an enzyme called myeloperoxidase in the blood may identify patients with chest pain who may be having a heart attack, according to a study of 604 patients. This blood test can be used in patients who have a negative troponin T test because myeloperoxidase can appear in the blood even if the heart is not damaged. Troponin T is another blood test used to diagnose a heart attack.
