Association of asthma with serum IgE levels and skin-test reactivity to allergens

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted among a group of 2657 subjects, ranging in age from 6 to 95 years old, of the relation of asthma or allergic rhinitis to serum IgE levels. It is noted that elevated levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE) occur in young patients with asthma. The study reveals that high levels of IgE in the blood were closely related to the prevalence of asthma, and that the standardized levels of IgE fr age and sex are a factor, as no asthma was found among those with the lowest levels of IgE when compared to the standard levels for their age and sex. It is concluded that asthma is almost always related to some type of Ig E reaction. The findings do not support the notion that there are basic differences between so-called allergic and nonallergic forms of asthma. Regardless of the level of blood IgE, a minority of the subjects in the study had asthma, suggesting that some other factor in host susceptibility may have a critical role in the disease.

Article Abstract:

The study results from determination of correlations between the serum level of the chitinase-like protein YKL-40 and the diagnosis and severity of asthma is reported. The findings reveal that serum YKL-40 levels might contribute to the stratification of the underlying severity of disease among patients with asthma, independent of disease activity.

Asthma genetics: from linear to multifactorial approaches

The article discusses several linear and multifactorial approaches that are being used for determining the several inconsistencies related to the asthma genetics. An integrated approach to explain the complexity and the heterogeneity of the disease is explained.
