Article Abstract:
Intravenous infusions of the drug atosiban may be useful in decreasing uterine contractions in pregnant women experiencing premature labor. Researchers studied the effect of atosiban on eight women experiencing premature labor contractions between 20 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. Blood samples revealed that the maximum concentration of atosiban occurred one hour after infusions began. Uterine contractions diminished by 65% in the second hour after infusion. Atosiban was quickly cleared from the blood after the infusions ended, as its half-life was about 18 minutes.
