Age-Related Alterations in Sleep Quality and Neuroendocrine Function: Interrelationships and Implications

Article Abstract:

Age-related changes in sleep may affect hormone levels, which in turn may cause changes in body composition and function. A study published in 2000 showed that a decrease in deep sleep in older men caused a decrease in growth hormone levels. Growth hormone is secreted at night, usually during deep sleep.

Basal Muscle Amino Acid Kinetics and Protein Synthesis in Healthy Young and Older Men

Article Abstract:

The loss of muscle tissue in aged people is not caused by changes in protein and amino acid metabolism, according to a study of 26 young men and 22 elderly men. It is likely that a combination of factors causes muscle loss, which in turn leads to loss of strength, function, and independence.

Age-Related Changes in Slow Wave Sleep and REM Sleep and Relationship With Growth Hormone and Cortisol Levels in Healthy Men

Article Abstract:

Changes in sleep stages in old age appear to alter blood levels of some hormones. In a study of 149 men, older men with fewer deep sleep stages had lower levels of growth hormone. However, a decrease in REM sleep after the age of 50 caused increased levels of cortisol.
