Accidental and Suicidal Adolescent Poisoning Deaths in the United States, 1979-1994

Article Abstract:

Carbon monoxide exposure, alcohol, or drugs are involved in most accidental and suicidal poisonings in teenagers. Researchers determined that 4,129 suicides and 3,807 deaths by accidental poisoning occurred among teenagers aged 10-19 years from 1979 through 1994. Only 9% of boys committed suicide by poisoning, while 28% of suicides by teenage girls was by poisoning. Drugs other than alcohol caused the deaths of 85% of 10-14-year-olds by suicide, while gas and vapor inhalation was prominent in the suicides of older teens. Carbon monoxide inhalation accounted for 74% of gas and vapor suicides. Accidental poisonings were caused by alcohol intoxication, drug use, and the inhalation of refrigerant, toluene, fuels, and other volatile substances.
