HIV patients who stop taking anti-HIV drugs can develop symptoms similar to the initial HIV infection and experience an increase in the amount of virus in their blood. This happened to three HIV patients who had been taking drugs that suppressed the virus, and then stopped taking them.

The CCR5-delta32 and the CCR2-64I genes appear to delay the progression of HIV infection to AIDS, according to a study of 4,504 people with HIV infection. However, the SDF-1 3' A gene has no effect on disease progression.
