A comparison of beclomethasone, salmeterol, and placebo in children with asthma

Article Abstract:

Inhaled salmeterol may effectively control asthma in children, with no apparent effect on the child's growth. Salmeterol is a beta 2-agonist which was compared to the corticosteroid beclomethasone or a placebo in 241 patients. Beclomethasone reduced airway reactivity and effectively controlled asthma, but was associated with a smaller increase in height over one year. Salmeterol dilated breathing passages, but was less effective in reducing airway reactivity. However, it did not appear to affect height. Choosing medication in mild asthma may require balancing symptom control and height effects.

A comparison of inhaled fluticasone and oral prednisone for children with severe acute asthma

Article Abstract:

Oral corticosteroids are better than inhaled corticosteroids for children with severe asthma exacerbations, according to a study of 100 children. Oral prednisone was more effective than inhaled fluticasone or other inhaled corticosteroids.

Effect of long-term treatment with inhaled budesonide on adult height in children with asthma

Article Abstract:

The drug budesonide does not seem to substantially retard growth in children who take it for asthma. In a study of 211 children, the 142 children who regularly used budesonide grew to a normal height as adults.
