A 45-year-old woman admitted to a hospital with nodules in her lungs and difficulty breathing was diagnosed with pulmonary-capillary hemangiomatosis. This disease is caused by a proliferation of blood vessels inside the lungs, which can block the small air passages in the lungs.

A 53-year-old woman with two small masses in her right lung and a history of rheumatoid arthritis was diagnosed with rheumatoid lung disease. This diagnosis was confirmed by a lung biopsy.

A 68-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis was diagnosed with rheumatoid lung disease. The patient was admitted to the hospital with chest pain and worsening shortness of breath. She had started experiencing symptoms two weeks before being admitted to the hospital. She had a 25-year history of severe rheumatoid arthritis and was confined to a wheelchair. Over the years, she had undergone surgery to replace both her knees and bones in both of her feet and for removal of rheumatoid nodules. She had quit smoking 30 years before being admitted to the hospital. Chest X-rays revealed fluid in the membrane surrounding the lungs and possible thickening of this membrane. She was diagnosed with pulmonary (lungs) hypertension after undergoing cardiac catheterization. An open lung biopsy revealed rheumatoid lung disease with hardening of the blood vessels of the lungs.
