The physician executive: role in the adaptation of American medicine

Article Abstract:

The role of physicians in managing health care facilities is discussed. No systematic strategies for involving physicians in managerial positions have been detected. However, the 'clinical directorate' model developed at Johns Hopkins University gives doctors a chance for playing the role of administrators of health facilities. The end of autonomy? Reflections on the postprofessional physician

An analysis of the factors eroding the autonomy of the medical profession and organizational categories for alternative models of health care delivery are presented.

Being a medical director, buying a business and establishing a joint venture are ruled out. Managed care seems to be a viable alternative.
