The demand for Medicare supplemental insurance benefits: the role of attitudes toward medical care and risk

Article Abstract:

Recipients' attitudes regarding medical care and risk affect the demand for Medicare supplemental insurance benefits. Recipients with negative attitude toward medical care tend to be pessimistic in availing supplemental insurance. Coverage decisions regarding medical services such as Part A deductible and skilled nursing facility coverage are affected by beneficiaries attitudes toward risk. On the other hand, availment of medical services such as prescription drug coverage and Part B benefits are influenced mainly by recipients' atitudes toward medical care.

Changes in the use of diagnostic technologies among Medicare patients, 1985 and 1990

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the changes in diagnostic procedures for Medicare patients in 1985 and 1990 by using five medical tracer conditions including congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, stroke, pneumonia and gastrointestinal hemorrhage. The result of the study showed that based on the five tracer conditions, between 1985 and 1990, an increase in rates of about 27% was seen for the 21 selected diagnostic procedures.
