Article Abstract:
The Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, MA, had already earned the 1993 Foster G. McGraw prize as well as the American Hospital Assn's 1994 CEO of the Year Award, when CEO John G. O'Brien told the board that a major reorganization was needed if the hospital is to survive the shift to managed care. O'Brien, who had been CEO for nine years, and his reorganization team have mapped out a new plan that includes putting teams in charge of patient care. Mental health/addiction services, family/primary health services and specialty/consultive services are the major divisions under which the hospital now operates.

Members of the management teams of hospitals and other healthcare centers often suffer from strained relations. Organizational consultants can help them develop skill in teamwork. Illustrations include Penrose-St Francis Healthcare System, Colorado Springs, CO, where an executive who failed to fulfill commitments was terminated. Among ways to promote cooperation on healthcare executive teams, serve as a role model and hire persons with appropriate training and skills.

A follow-up look at San Francisco, CA's Mount Zion Medical Center, winner of the 1990 Foster G. McGaw Prize, is presented. Mount Zion's acquisition by the University of California-San Francisco has eased the center's financial crisis, but the combined organization faces an ongoing need to cut costs. The construction of a new treatment center has been delayed, and some programs could be eliminated.
