Article Abstract:
The competitive circumstances between small community hospitals and big urban medical centers are examined. A framework for market predisposition is discussed along with the manner in which a particular hospital influences it. The 82 hospitals operated by HealthTrust, Inc categorized as small hospitals operating in the shadow of a medical center were enlisted in the review of market research studies. The results suggest that even small hospitals can deliver competent medical care. Several considerations for a successful strategy development is discussed.

There are basic and responsible tasks which a new president or CEO of a hospital must prepare himself to undertake. Important managerial imperatives are implemented to integrate and maximize the various resources of the organization. Several idealized concepts of managerial imperatives must not remain merely as individualized codes of conduct. They should be institutionalized to obtain desirable operational goals.

Hospital administrators have increasingly applied strategic planning to more effectively exploit market opportunities. However, a purely profit-oriented approach is inappropriate for hospitals. The concept of strategy formulation must be widened to consider the values of health care personnel and the hospital's responsibilities as a social institution.
