New evidence on the relationship between income and health

Article Abstract:

There is a positive correlation between income and health. However, whether income causes health has not been analyzed. Environmental regulations have led to the investigation of the effects of income on health. Data from the National Survey of Families and Households, the Survey of Income and Program Participation and the National Health Interview Survey were gathered to measure the impact of income on measures of health such as health status, work and functional limitations, bed days, average daily consumption of alcohol and scales of depressive symptoms and alcoholic behavior.

The welfare loss of disease and the theory of taxation

Article Abstract:

Modern medicine and public health aims to control the spreading of disease. High mortality and morbidity rates have been experienced by developing countries due to infectious diseases such as AIDS or malaria. The main problem for public health authorities when setting priorities in controlling diseases is the welfare loss experienced by a population due to a disease. A new approach to determine the welfare loss caused by a disease is presented interpreting disease as a tax on consumers' behavior.
