Article Abstract:
Research findings on the effect and substance of mission statements of 103 Canadian not-for-profit health organizations is presented. Mission statements are formal declarations of an organization's specific and long-term objectives. There are six major elements of mission statements of health care organizations. These are target customers and markets, principal services provided, geographical area serviced, organizational philosophy or values, the organization's chosen self-image and its desired public image. The research indicates that developing mission statements for not-for-profit healthcare industry is important because of their behavioral and financial impacts.

Article Abstract:
Most hospitals will be unable to adapt to the changing health care environment involving prepayment, managed care and physician practices. Unless traditional hospitals form integrated delivery systems, it is unlikely that they can survive the intense competition. In the case of nonprofit hospitals, governing boards' influence will become less as their power shifts to physicians and hospital executives.

Article Abstract:
Hospitals are adopting either of two forms of organizational structure as they develop into integrated health care systems. These are for-profit hospitals with centralized control and non-profit hospitals as alliances which allow limited authority to integrated health care systems. The differences in the orientation of these two structures are discussed.
