Mad cows and weird science

Article Abstract:

Hospitals are taking extraordinary measures to fight proteinaceous infectious particles (prions), which cause subacute spongiform encephalopathy, whose forms include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and mad cow disease. The measures are needed, because the particles can withstand standard infection-control methods. Jo Micek of Kansas City, MO's St. Joseph Health Center noted the importance of setting up prion-control measures in advance.

Network news: signaling a trend, Tenet-SmithKline deal links California hospital labs

Article Abstract:

Hospital labs have been able to retain a high degree of independence, as the managed care trend has taken root, but that may be about to change. A Tenet Healthcare deal with SmithKline Beecham Clinical Laboratories, under which SmithKline will manage 30 California hospitals' lab operations. The hospitals' labs will be organized into two operations, one for high-volume, routine work and one for rapid-response work.
