Geriatric services grow; hospitals work together to fill gaps in continuum of care

Article Abstract:

Hospitals are expected to cooperate in providing a continuum of preventive and ambulatory services for the elderly as reform measures are implemented. Three hospitals in Salt Lake City, UT, are planning a network for geriatric care in the Intermountain Health Care system. The program offers health education and service discounts to seniors who become members of the organization. A 1991 American Hospital Assn survey shows that community hospitals provide the aged many services, of which the most popular is emergency response.

Report outlines 'best practices' for surgery units

Article Abstract:

A survey by Arthur Andersen & Co compared management of outpatient surgery units run by hospitals with freestanding outpatient surgical centers. AMI Tarzana Regional Medical Center, Tarzana, CA, was selected as an efficiently run facility, where patients walk into surgery after waiting no longer than one hour because paper work is completed in advance. For efficient scheduling, a professional person with knowledge of procedures should use an automated system to track physician performance and to order needed supplies.
