Economies of scope in physicians' work: the performance of multiple surgery

Article Abstract:

The establishment of the Medicare Fee Schedule on Jan. 1, 1992, has given physicians the authority to dictate the costs for a wide range of medical services except for payments for multiple surgery which are still based on existing policies and conventions. Studies show that there are significant economies of scope in performing this class of medical precedures. These findings indicate the need for new policies which will reduce the cost of secondary procedures by as much as 50% while retaining existing policies for subsequent operations.

Applications of health risk adjustment: what can be learned from experience to date?

Article Abstract:

Health status risk assessment and adjustment are important components in any health care reform strategy, since their practical application includes a series of trade-offs between risk adjustment theory, data availability and interests of players to participate in the game. The tools and methods needed for identifying health-based payments are obtainable, and in majority of cases, well developed. Despite the need to focus on various operational issues, hindrances can be met and health-based payments is practical move.

Article Abstract:

The convenience and profits brought by third party payers may soon be no more as the subsidy of the costs of medical education no longer takes effect. Health professionals are on their way into critical years as several changes have begun to reshape the healthcare landscape. However, it may not be necessarily true that health care subsidies will restructure their payment schemes as to increase the profit potentials.
