The Marshfield Clinic, in rural Wisconsin, has lost an antitrust case in which Blue Cross/Blue Shield United of Wisconsin sued the clinic for blocking its health maintenance organization from entering the local market. The clinic, part of an integrated healthcare delivery system, was ordered to nullify its cooperative agreements with several area clinics and forced to void noncompetition agreements with its salaried doctors. Other clinics are concerned that the case could lead to the demise of integrated delivery systems.

The AIDS Alternative Health Project (AAHP) in Chicago, IL, offers alternative AIDS treatments such as massage and acupuncture in coordination with Western therapies. The AAHP works closely with medical doctors, who refer their patients to the AAHP for alternative treatments. The AAHP services Cook County Hospital's HIV Primary Care Clinic; Project Vida, an organization for Latinos and African-Americans with HIV; and the Rafael Center, which aids homeless people.

Article Abstract:
Space Diagnostics' Meredith Spear, Flad & Associates' Gary Everson, and Network Resources' Krasna Svoboda have proposed the development of 'smart shells,' multiuse facilities that could serve communities that lack healthcare facilities and other civic structures. Telecommunication capabilities and portable equipment would enable such structures to serve as medical centers, one day per week.
