Article Abstract:
Rural cancer patients with limited access to cancer treatment facilities are now receiving treatment through cancer outreach programs such as the Rural Cancer Outreach Program (RCOP) in Virginia. The RCOP brings state-of-the-art cancer treatment and prevention programs to rural areas and trains community physicians to manage cancer emergencies. Nearly 500 patients have been evaluated since the first RCOP was implemented in Jan 1992. Medical centers can evaluate RCOP necessity by measuring the RCOP's possible impact on cancer patient outcomes.

Article Abstract:
Americans need to revive their sense of community to control escalating medical costs and ensure medical coverage for everyone. Individuals must forgo the greed and self-interest indicative of the 1980s and encourage a domestic agenda aimed at providing more social services for the poor and middle class. The healthcare industry, including physicians, hospitals and insurance companies, must join together with the federal government to create a national health insurance program free of corporate and individual special interests.
