Butting heads: Texas hospitals and politicos haggle over windfall from suit against cigarette makers

Article Abstract:

A first-year payment of $400 million was supposed to go to several Texas academic medical centers, as a result of the state's $15.3 billion settlement with the tobacco industry, but that was before the state legislature intervened. Attorney general Dan Morales had promised the money, which was to be used for indigent care and cancer research. The legislature will now determine how the settlement money is allocated.

Specialists to spare at teaching hospitals

Article Abstract:

Medical specialists at teaching hospitals may find themselves underemployed because these hospitals will be unable to obtain enough enrollees in their health maintenance organizations to support them. The proliferation of managed care will decrease the need for medical specialists and they will not obtain the salaries that they have had in the past.
