Article Abstract:
Psychiatric day treatment programs are one of the fastest growing trends in the mental health segment of health care, and supporters say that it is beneficial to all psychiatric patients. Partial hospitalization programs accounted for 11.4% of all psychiatric admissions in 1993, showing an increase of more than 50% between 1992-93. Day programs serve patients for four to eight hours per day and offer intensive patient care that often focuses on family or group therapy.

Sisters of Charity Health Care Systems formed a regional board for its five Colorado hospitals. The new body gives the hospitals a united base from which to seek managed-care contracts, but each hospital remains autonomous in its service area. The hospitals' individual boards track local-market needs, while the regional board is responsible for strategic direction, regional budgeting, and capital allocation.
