This article will provide guidelines for designing a comprehensive scheduling system in complex health care centers such as hospitals. The proposed decision support system ensures that each component of the scheduling system will be designed independently to fit an overall optimization criterion. Its advantages involve providing more flexibility to system design and implementation, simplifying the decision-making process, and empowering decision makers at the operational level. This article provides case-study analysis of procurement environments before and after implementing Internet-enabled procurement processes. A holistic framework used in the analysis identifies all areas creating cost within the procurement environment. Examples of procurement environments, including total costs, are included. Specific technologies offered by select companies to facilitate Internet procurement are reviewed.
