Article Abstract:
In 1980, the Medical Records Department of Columbus Children's Hospital (CCH) established a Word Processing Center. The word processing software package had the capability to perform advanced text functions, as well as file processing, merging, sorting, and report creation. Productivity of the Word Processing Center staff increased by thirty percent. The Word Processing Center produced medical records such as discharge summaries, operative reports, x-rays, clinical reports, and EEGs. The success of the Word Processing Center resulted in other departments acquiring word processing equipment. A network including the word processing equipment, a mainframe computer, and microcomputers is being planned for the near future.

Three management objectives of quality circles are improved quality, improved productivity and improved morale. For quality circles to succeed participation must be voluntary, management must be supportive, the program must not only identify but also solve problems and each circle must have the right to select its own problem. The quality circle organization should be integrated into the existing organizational structure and should consist of a steering committee, a facilitator, a leader and members. Quality circles in hospitals are new and therefore it is difficult to measure their impact.

Article Abstract:
Clinical information is being combined with financial information in order to facilitate new reimbursement plans and regulations such as DRGs and TEFRA. Medical records managers will need to understand this information in order to identify diseases and trends. Corporate planning will be based on patient mix, referral patterns, and disease trends. In addition, the health record manager will be instrumental in educating health care professionals in the use of new data processing programs.
