High-performance organizations have structured their resources around major processes that integrate functions rather than focus on functional excellence. These major organizational processes include identifying and creating demand, designing products and services, and delivering products and services. Integrated resource management is an integral part of an integrated enterprise management approach that views the organization from several perspectives: the individual, teams, functions and their integration, the enterprise itself, the enterprise in its environment, and the enterprise through time. This case study looks at the application of the integrated resource management principles by a health care organization. The organization's operational and strategic activities reflect the integration of functions into the major processes and perspectives of integrated enterprise management. Organizations today are changing at an accelerated pace. Competition is intensifying and information technologies are being used as a competitive weapon. A model for integrated enterprise management (IEM) has been developed that incorporates the body of knowledge needed to equip individuals with the skills needed to compete in today's changing environment. The IEM model views business issues from multiple perspectives and describes the knowledge necessary to gain these different perspectives. Included in the model is viewing of business issues from the perspective of the individual, team, functional area, entire enterprise, environment, and the changing perspective over time. Managers in all types of health care organizations increasingly face the task of reducing operating expenses. Typically, staffing is first to be rationalized, followed by supplies. Through the use of basic inventory management techniques, a manager can quickly prioritize inventory items and develop appropriate inventory policies to rationalize the expense associated with materials management. This case study looks at the application of ABC inventory analysis and the economic order quantity model by a pediatric care center.
