31-P NMR spectroscopic analysis of wound healing: the effect of hydrocolloid therapy

Article Abstract:

Chronic wound biochemistry measured with phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy may provide a quick assessment of the healing status for a wound. Wound care professionals usually have to wait two weeks to decide whether a chronic wound is generating, storing or using energy. An NMR analysis of two low-pH hydrocolloid materials used to treat two non-healing leg ulcers showed cellular activity which indicated the healing outcome.

Management of the acute burn wound: an overview

Article Abstract:

Acute burn wounds are managed similarly to other severe wounds, with the goals of minimizing infection and scar tissue, keeping the wound moist, and protecting surrounding tissue from trauma. Some facilities use hydrotherapy or immersion. Wound depth and location dictate whether to use synthetic, biologic, or biosynthetic dressings. Most full-thickness burns are treated with skin or cultured skin substitute grafts.

Looking to the future of diabetic wound care

Article Abstract:

The management of diabetic patients needs to involve health care workers from many disciplines. Some centers that use this multidisciplinary approach have been able to reduce their amputation rate by 50% to 85%. New methods are needed to test the skin on the feet to detect neuropathy. There are thousands of products on the market to treat diabetic wounds but many have not been properly evaluated.
