Article Abstract:

The availability of mortgage funds, a statistical study indicates, is relatively elastic, has been for some time, and has been tied to other investment markets longer and more strongly than is usually thought. Interest rate changes affect the source of mortgage money more than the amount. However, the rise and fall of interest rates do appear to be major influences on housing starts.

This article evaluates the mortgage lending process by including the lender characteristics in determining acceptance or rejection based on mortgage origin. The author finds that lender attributes influence decisions based on applicants race and racial composition of neighborhoods.
