The quest for community

Article Abstract:

The ethnically and linguistically divided American society, especially in California, is trying to arrive at a common identity, relegating its ethnic and racist background to secondary position. The two major opposing concepts prevalent in the American society regarding ethnic differences are liberal nationalism, which gives priority to a common American identity, and multiculturalism, which gives importance to racist and cultural origins. A Los Angeles County survey done in 1994 reveals that most Americans, irrespective of their ethnicity, prefer to be known as Americans rather than by their ethnic or racist background.
