Article Abstract:

Latin Americans play an important role in politics in Los Angeles, CA. Xavier Becerra, Congressman, and Antonio Villaraigosa, Speaker in the Californian Assembly, are likely contenders for Mayor of Los Angeles in 2001. Robert Hertzberg could take over from Villaraigosa as Speaker, but he could be replaced by a Latin American, Gil Cedillo, in 2002.

Article Abstract:

The numerous social issues which directly influence the Hispanic-American population, such as affirmative action, welfare and immigration reforms, have resulted in increased Latino political participation. Over 40 California cities have majority Latino city councils with six in southeast Los Angeles County alone. Approximately 1.4 million Latinos are expected to make their votes count in the Nov. 1996 presidential elections.

Jewish-Latino relations in Los Angeles

Article Abstract:

Cultural diversity is expected to continually dominate and shape California's political makeup. The Los Angeles' Democratic primary for the 20th state Senate District which was fought between Hispanic American and City Councilman Richard Alarcon and Jewish leader and former state Assemblyman Richard Katz demonstrated the increasing political power of Hispanic Americans and American Jews. Political analysts suggest that the cooperation between minorities will decide their political future.
