Article Abstract:

In 1900 California was not a leader in national politics but with the election of Governor Hiram Johnson in 1910 it became one of the first states with primary elections, presidential primaries, initiative and referendum and cross-filling. California became the first major state where suburbs helped the political balance, but in the late 20th century California voters rebelled at the works of liberal Legislature and Proposition 13 freezing property taxes, was passed in 1978. During the 1990s California has become less the leader and more the exotic state it previously was.

Tribes come of age

Article Abstract:

The Californian tribes are beginning to understand the value of using political influence for their own benefit rather than trying to make changes by undertaking worthless court cases. Most of the 41 Californian tribes own casinos which earned them revenues of around $1.4 billion in 1997. Their wealth has enabled them to play an influential role in Californian politics. The tribes have become very important contributors to the political parties making contributions worth $36 million during the 1997-98 election year. The tribes came together to support Proposition 5.

The canvas casino: California, Indian tribes battle over gambling

Article Abstract:

Indians in California are expanding their casinos and gambling halls. The state is fighting the spread. Gambling is virtually the sole source of revenue for many tribes, especially in California where Indians are often neglected by the state. Federal law established the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, which required states to allow gambling on Indian reservations, but many states are challenging the law or asking Congress to clarify it.
