Portable breathalyzers are increasingly being utilized in the workplace and schools following policies for safety related concerns. Particular other applications are also expanding, including International Law Enforcement (ILE) and hospital emergency rooms, propelling an increased use of ILE agencies in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The Phoenix Portable Breath Analyzer, a year 2000-compliant, high-end breathalyzer, is being utilized internationally by law enforcers to detect alcohol abuse.

Sandia National Laboratories, of Albuquerque, NM, has developed a digital isolation and incompatibility device that promises to improve computer systems security. Larry Dalton of Sandia has modified the technology to develop the Recodable Locking Device (RLD), the world's smallest combination lock. RLD is capable of providing absolute security against unauthorized access. RLD is expected to be used in protecting nuclear control systems.

Biometric devices are now being incorporated in such equipment as computers and they are becoming more popular because they are smaller, more accurate, faster, cheaper and easier to employ. Biometrics is the missing connection in high security and the emergence of biometric devices indicates that they are no longer a science fiction, said Terry Milkie, Mytec Technologies' director of engineering and new product development.
