Article Abstract:
The University of California (UC) Regents' decision to abandon affirmative action within the university system has triggered a politically charged debate. Anger has been expressed over the fact that a traditionally apolitical forum has been made the board for major national identity crisis. Those who attended the meeting feel that the issue before the UC Board of Regents was not of race, ethnicity or economic aspects but simple politics. Governor Pete Wilson whose policies had been a major reason behind the scene has been the target of attack.

Article Abstract:
Charles Quackenbush, a Republican and insurance commissioner since Nov 1994, has an unimpressive record in his office. He managed to settle with only 33 insurance companies for consumer refunds as mandated by Proposition 103, while over 100 insurance companies refused to give rebates. Critics, Democrats and consumers, accused him of settling for too little. But Quackenbush is not discouraged by these setbacks and is already preparing for re-election.
