A direct examination of the dividend clientele hypothesis
Article Abstract:
An empirical model of the dividend clientele hypothesis is analyzed. The analysis applies data from the 1983 Survey of Consumer Finances and considers individual portfolio sets. It is shown that investor portfolio choices are conditioned by prevailing tax rates. The relationship between portfolio choice and tax rates implies a need for considering security price data for validating the clientele hypothesis.
