An architect chooses to stay in New Bedford, MA, the city he was born in and there he puts his profession into use. With the help of local non-profit organizations, he was able to improve the city's port. Moreover, because of his interest in the city's welfare, he became its mayor in 1985.

Poetry in brick and mud

Article Abstract:

A review of the work of Architect Laurie Baker is presented. Baker has designed buildings in India for over 50 years although he was born in the UK. His ideas have been used by Indian architects who work for the Center of Science and Technology for Rural Development.
