Baseball's varying conditions of play, the different rates at which talent develop and injuries are some of the reasons why it is difficult to predict who among the rookies will have a successful career in the major league. For the 1997 season, only about ten rookies out of 150 may make it.

Every US-owned publishing company, except probably Time Warner, William Morrow and Simon & Schuster, has fallen into the hands of German publishing firms. Bertelsmann AG, for instance, caught the literary world by surprise when it bought Random House from Advance Publications for $1.4 bil.

The cable television network for women, Oxygen, is discussed with reference to its founder and its problems. Television executive Geraldine Laybourne had achieved success with Nickelodeon, when she set up Oxygen, but this new network has been criticised and many cannot see it.
