Stella Waterman was the star of her high school basketball team in New Gloucester, ME. She joined the team in 1946, and she recalls a victory against a larger school in 1950. During high school, she scored 2,161 points, which is the third-highest point total still for high school girls.

Smokey was a natural

Smokey Woods is a legend to old time baseball fans in Maine, who remember Woods' prowess during the 1913 semipro season. Woods' real first name was Florence, and she quit the game to become a nun. She was named to the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979.
