An officer and a reader: The role of literature in military education

An officer discusses his experience of teaching literature at the United States Military Academy to men and women who will upon graduation become Army lieutenants. He believes that reading makes it possible for those who must operate in a closed world of regimentation to come to grips with ambiguity and to cultivate a resilient imagination.
