Men from other religious orders and formerly from various secular professions have joined together at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert, a Benedictine Order. The monks spend their days in prayer, contemplation and simple labor. While other Catholic orders are shrinking, this monastery is growing.

The four children of Dean and Linda Damm live impoverished, neglected lives in an abandoned pig farm the family is squatting in illegally. Dean Damm is abusive and his wife Linda is a drug addict. The children would like to be taken away to foster families but fear they will be separated.
