Article Abstract:

The automobile became more popular as it gained speed and power and became easier and cheaper to produce. Greater speed led to the development of professional racing and caused more accidents. Henry Ford began mass producing the Model T and sold about 1 million cars in 1920.

American's love affair with cars with powerful engines, known as muscle cars, began in the 1960s with the Pontiac GTO developed by John Z. DeLorean. Ordinary cars were customized with special engine and transmission modifications to make them into drag racers.
